Ripple is a blockchain-based digital payment network and protocol with its own token of XRP. Ripple was first released in 2012 and was co-founded by Chris Larsen and Jed McCaleb to act as a payment settlement asset exchange and remittance system, similar to the SWIFT system for international money and security transfers, which is used by banks and financial middlemen dealing across currencies. The XRP Ledger processes transactions roughly every 3-5 seconds. Ripple operates on an open-source and peer-to-peer decentralized platform that has a maximum supply of 100,000,000,000 XRP coins.
