Litecoin is an altcoin that was created in October 2011 by Charles “Charlie” Lee, a former Google engineer, to become an open-source global payment network that is not controlled by any central authority. It was one of the first altcoins derived from Bitcoin’s original open source code, using the proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm in order to secure their networks. Litecoin is a peer-to-peer (P2P) virtual currency that has a maximum supply will never exceed 84 million Litecoins in circulation.
